Dr. Hampden Kuhns (CEO) founded Load IQ (formerly IBUCS LLC) in
2007 as a university startup company to commercialize the Utility Accountant
load disaggregation system. He is also a
Research Professor at DRI in Reno, Nevada, where he has been employed since 1997. Dr. Kuhns received his B.S. at Caltech and his Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Kuhns has been the PI or Co-PI on dozens air quality projects
funded by federal, state, and local government agencies as well as private
sector businesses. Throughout
his professional career, he has been involved in developing innovative systems
to measure physical phenomena including road dust emissions, particle emissions
from vehicle exhaust, wind-entrained dust, and snow accumulation. As part of a
2005 sabbatical and a project with the California Energy Commission, he
designed and built a prototype UA. A portion of his prior research has involved
distinguishing influence of multiple
pollutant sources at air pollution monitoring sites. He has modified the
framework of these models to identify the on/off state of appliances using the
Utility Accountant. | Dr. Morien Roberts (CTO) is a co-founder of Load IQ and an Associate Research Computer Engineer at DRI. He has 25+ years of
programming experience, ranging from assembly language to object-oriented
systems, with extensive experience in database programming. Dr. Roberts received his Ph.D. from the University of York. As a consultant, he has written networking
packet drivers for Intel, IBM, and SMC. He
is experienced with distributed computing programming as well as client server
applications making use of Java and JavaScript. Dr. Roberts has extensive
hardware design experience, from gate- and chip-level digital logic designs to
complete microprocessor systems. He has
developed digital and hybrid analog/digital systems, producing many printed
circuit boards. In addition to the UA,
he has designed many embedded systems of varying complexity including a
scientific instrument consisting of 11 networked embedded processors running a
mixture of C and assembler language.
